National Interaction cum Evaluation Workshop for ENVIS Centres

Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Environment, Forest and Climate Change launched the Environment Information System (ENVIS) portal at the Inaugural function of the National Interaction-cum-Evaluation Workshop for ENVIS Centres.
The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change , Government of India held three days National Interaction cum Evaluation Workshop of Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centres during February 17th - 19th, 2016 at The Ashok Hotel, New Delhi. The ENVIS Centre hosted at WWF-India, Delhi has organised the Workshop on behalf of the MoEF&CC.
This workshop is organized to evaluate the functioning of the ENVIS Centres as per the Guidelines of the ENVIS Scheme framed by the Ministry. The contents of the ENVIS website are evaluated by an Expert Committee "ONLINE" and time slot is around 40 minutes.

The Brain Storming Session with ENVIS Centres based in Delhi was held on 12th January, 2016 (Tuesday) at 10:00 am in ‘Teesta’ Conference Room, Indira Paryavaran Bhawan, Jor Bagh, New Delhi-110003. During the meeting, each ENVIS Centre presented their activities during 2015-16, future plan of activities in FY 2016-17 including any case studies, primary research, etc., and also highlighted issues/suggestions/ideas for Government policy.

Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAS) was flagged off on 15 October 2015 from Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences; Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Hon’ble Minister of Railways; Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Shri Y. S. Chowdary, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science & Technology and Shri Manoj Sinha, Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways in presence of several other dignitaries and guests.
The state-of-the-art exhibition aboard the 'Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAS)' aims to create awareness among various sections of society, especially students, as to how Climate Change can be combated through mitigation and adaptation
SECAS is an innovative mobile science exhibition mounted on a 16 coach AC train which has been custom-built for Department of Science & Technology (DST) by Indian Railway.
The SECAS in its current phase is scheduled to travel across the country for about seven months, halting at 64 locations in 20 States, covering 19,800 km. Of the 16 coaches of SECAS, exhibition in 8 coaches developed by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) on behalf of MoEFCC, GoI is exclusively devoted to information, case studies and material related to various aspect of Climate change, the underlying science, impacts, adaptation activities, mitigation solutions and policy approaches in a manner that is easy to understand and interesting for not just school students but also the masses.
The broad theme covered in each exhibition coach is as follows:
Coach 1: Understanding Climate Change - Insights in the climate as a system, the greenhouse gas effect and the underlying reasons for climate change with key message that the current change in the climate is due to human activities.
Coach 2: Impact of Climate Change - How temperature rise, monsoon variations, sea level rise are predicted to affect vital sectors like water, agriculture, forests and biodiversity, and human health and ways to reduce these.
Coach 3 & 4: Adaptation - Concepts of adaptation and examples from day to day life, adaptation strategies and stories from field. Adaptation options in urban and rural contexts and the adaptation actions India is taking.
Coach 5 & 6: Mitigation - Concept and definition with examples, emphasis on restoring balance, enhancing sinks and reducing emission through Renewable Energy (RE) technologies. Various programmes implemented by India and low carbon strategies and ambitious goal to increase RE footprint.
Coach 7: International Negotiations on Climate Change - Introduction to UNFCCC, IPCC and internationally agreed action & targets. Explaining concept of equity and common but differential responsibility, Kyoto protocol & other key outcomes of major COP, etc.
Coach 8: Handprint - What can one do at school, on roads, at home and in offices and focus on concept of lifestyle choices with the key message ‘Increase your Handprint. Decrease your Footprint’.
Coach 9 & 10: Exhibition put up by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India, covering themes like Biotechnology for bio-resources and nature conservation with emphasis on Tiger Conservation and Chemical Ecology and India’s research and development initiatives in field of Biotechnology.
Coach 11: Exhibition put up by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) showcasing select innovations, demonstrating the ingenuity of common people and an innovative project which uses augmented reality techniques. Exhibition on themes like Innovations in S&T, Science Education, DST Scholarships & Schemes, Careers in S&T, etc.
The Delhi based ENVIS centres facilitates the exhibition aboard the Science Express Climate Change Special (SECCS), taking place from the 6th to 8th December, 2015 at Pragati Maidan by highlighting their respective activities.
The ENVIS Team is also grateful to MoEF& CC for giving us the opportunity of conveying a message which is vital in shaping up a child for the future.

World Environment Day June 5, 2015 at MoEF&CC, Delhi

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June, 5th to raise Global Awareness for taking positive Environmental Action to protect Nature and the Planet Earth. On this auspicious occasion, Shri Ashok Lavasa, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has released three Posters, one Newsletter and one Ganga Bulletin prepared by CPCB ENVIS on World Environment Day. Shri Shashi Shekhar, former Chairman, CPCB and presently Secretary, Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation; Shri S. S. Garbyal Director General (Forests) and Special Secretary, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; and Dr. A. B. Akolkar, Member Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) was also present on the occasion.

March 23-24, 2015 at Guwahati, Assam
A 2-day evaluation-cum-training Workshop for ENVIS Centres of Eastern and North-Eastern Region (i.e., those located in the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tripura, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal) was held at Guwahati, Assam hosted by ENVIS Centre at Assam Science Technology and Environment, Council (ASTEC) during 23rd and 24th March, 2015. Thirty particpants from 13 ENVIS Centres— comprising both thematic and State/UT Centres— attended the Workshop. The venue of the Workshop was NEDFi Convention Centre, Guwahati. This workshop was organised to evaluate the functioning of the ENVIS Centres as per the Guidelines of the ENVIS Scheme, framed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India. In addition to evaluation, an orientation-cum-training programme on Bhuvan Portal (a geo-spatial platform of National Remote Sensing Centre of ISRO) was also conducted by the scientist of NRSC, ISRO, Hyderabad. Thirty delegates from 13 ENVIS Centres (8 State and 5 thematic) and 4 eminent experts from diverse fields participated in this workshop. During the inaugural session, knowledge products were also released by Director, ASTEC, Economic Advisor, MoEF&CC and Expert members. Book on “Fly-Ash Status & Utilisation in India” by ISM, Dhanbad while ZSI, Kolkata released two mobile apps Indian postage stamp on faunal biodiversity and Insect identification method created for android smart phones. Feedback from Experts who were part of the independent committee suggested scope for improvement which is an ongoing process.

February 16-17, 2015 at Nagpur, Maharashtra
A 2-day evaluation-cum-training Workshop for ENVIS Centres of Western Region (i.e., those located in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh) was held at Nagpur, Maharashtra hosted by ENVIS Centre at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute during 16th and 17th February, 2015. Around 30 participants of 13 thematic as well as State/UT ENVIS Centres participated in the Workshop. The Workshop was inaugurated by the Director NEERI, Dr. Satish R. Wate. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Wate stressed on the significance of environmental information as all important policy decisions hinge on the insightful information. He congratulated the Ministry for feeling the need to establish ENVIS Scheme and hoped that ENVIS will keep serving the stakeholders and public at large for their multifarious information requirements. Shri Abhay Kumar, Deputy Economic Adviser, MoEFCC said that the Ministry has roped in distinguished experts cutting across various fields to evaluate as well as advise the Centres. Among the experts who attended the Workshop for evaluation included Shri Krishna Rao T.V.P., Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Dr. A.K. Soni and Dr. Tamil Selvan. Two parallel sessions for evaluating the activities of Thematic and State ENVIS Centres were carried out in the Workshop. The second day of the Workshop was marked by a crucial training by NRSC official Shri Arul Raj on Bhuvan portal, a geospatial portal to enable the GIS-based information in the websites of the ENVIS Centres. The Workshop concluded with a thought- provoking session by experts who shared their observations and suggestions followed by comments by coordinators of ENVIS Centres.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India held two days Regional Evaluation Workshop of ENVIS Centres of Southern Region during 05th-06th February, 2015 at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The ENVIS Centre hosted at Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu was organised the Workshop on behalf of the MoEF.
Regional workshop was organized to evaluate the functioning of the ENVIS Centres as per the Guidelines of the ENVIS Scheme, framed by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India. An Expert Committee evaluated "online" the contents of ENVIS website and any other information product. The second day of the Workshop was marked by a crucial training by NRSC officals Shri P. G. TERI has organized a one-day Seminar on “RE-ENVIS 2014” Overview of Renewable Energy Landscape in India as part of Environmental Information System (ENVIS) activity on 12th September 2014, at TERI, New Delhi.
This seminar was focus on about the current status of Renewable Energy in India and also to Share best practices, models, experiences, lessons learned and innovative methods to the researchers, experts, teachers etc for sustainable future.

CPCB has organized World Environment Day on 5 June 2014, at Parivesh Bhawan, East Arjun Nagar, Shahdara, Delhi.
In-House activities of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) exhibited on the occassion of World Environment Day (WED) 5 June 2014 “Making Efforts for Zero Solid Waste Concept ". ENVIS Center 01 at CPCB has been participated in this Event.

28th - 30th March, 2014 at Gangtok, Sikkim
The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India held three days National Interaction cum Evaluation Workshop of Environmental Information System ( ENVIS) Centres during March 28-30, 2014 at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok, Sikkim. The ENVIS Centre hosted at Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology (SCSTS), Gangtok was organised the Workshop on behalf of the MoEF.
National Workshop was organized to evaluate the activities of ENVIS Centres and decide their continuance based on their performance. All the ENVIS Centres set up by Ministry of Environment and Forests was invited to make the presentation of their activities in the workshop for the larger dissemination and also evaluation by the MoEF.

The ENVIS Centre hosted at Disaster Management Institute (DMI), Bhopal was organised the Workshop on behalf of the MoEF.
National Workshop was organized to evaluate the activities of ENVIS Centres and decide their continuance based on their performance. All the ENVIS Centres in the country set up by Ministry of Environment and Forests was invited to make the presentation of their activities in the workshop for the larger dissemination and also evaluation by the MoEF.
