Ambient
Air Quality in Delhi
The Central Pollution Control Board
has been conducting ambient air quality monitoring at seven locations in Delhi.
The locations have been categorised based on land use, i.e. residential, industrial
and traffic intersection. The comparison of ambient air quality data for the years
2000 and 2001 reveal that:
- Concentrations
of all regulatory pollutants in ambient air have reduced. This may be attributed
to the increased use of cleaner fuels like low sulphur diesel and compressed natural
gas (CNG) in motor vehicles.
- Annual
average SPM concentration for all monitoring sites in Delhi came down to 347 µg/m3
in 2001 from 405 µg/m3 in the previous year.
- Annual
average value of RSPM for all monitoring sites came down to 137 µg/m3
in 2001 from a value of 159 µg/m3 in 2000.
- Concentration
of annual average value of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide in ambient air
of Delhi decreased to 14 µg/m3 from 18 µg/m3 and 34 µg/m3
from 36 µg/m3 respectively. However, at ITO traffic intersection the
values of NO2 increased as compared to the previous years.
